Administrative HistoryAlliance Boots was formed in July 2006 with the merger of the Boots Group and Alliance UniChem, an international pharmacy-led health and beauty group. In June 2007 Alliance Boots was acquired by AB Acquisitions Ltd and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. L.P. (KKR) a private equity company. Alliance Boots was established in Switzerland under the Executive Chairmanship of Stefano Pessina supported by a Group Operating Committee. The Board comprised of four executive Directors (Ornella Barra, Steve Duncan, George Fairweather and Marco Pagni) and three KKR Directors (Dominic Murphy, Mattia Caprioli and Sergio D'Angelo) and four appointed non-executive Directors. In January 2009 the Group structure was divided into two divisions with Alex Gourlay becoming the Chief Executive of the Health & Beauty Division and Ornella Barra becoming Chief Executive of the Pharmaceutical Wholesale Division. In April 2009 an executive committee, with responsability for the day to day management of the Group, replaced the Group operating committee. The committee was chaired by Stefano Pessina and comprised of the executive Directors and two KKR Directors.

The mission of the company was to become the world's leading pharmacy-led health and beauty group, which led to them developing their core business of health and beauty retailing and pharmaceutical wholesailing in new markets. In July 2010 they became the majority shareholder in Hedef Alliance, one of the largest pharmaceutical wholesalers in Turkey. In Decemer 2010 they aquired majority ownership of ANZAG, one of the largest wholesalers in Germany. In June 2012 the company entered into a strategic partnership with Walgreen Co., the largest retail drugstore chain in the US, the future option to fully merge with Alliance Boots. A new joint venture, Walgreens Boots Alliance Development, was established in Switzerland which was responsible for delivering joint synergies. In March 2013 the company together with Walgreens, announced a long term partnership with AmerisourceBergen, one of the largest pharmaceutical wholesalers in the US. In January 2014 the company received approval to acquire a 12% stake in Nanjing Pharmaceutical Company Ltd., one of the major pharmaceutical wholesalers in China, making Alliance Boots its second largest shareholder. Also in 2014 the company acquired Farmacias Ahumada which operated two major retail pharmacy networks, Farmacias Benavides in Mexico and Farmacias Ahumada in Chile which comprised of 1,400 stores.
On 31st December 2014 Alliance Boots and Walgreen Co merged to form Walgreens Boots Alliance.
