| Activity | George Akeroyd began his business career as an apprentice with D H R Wilson of Bradford, a pharmaceutical chemist. Upon completing his apprenticeship he left Wilson's to gain wholesale experience with a Bradford firm of Wholsale chemists, he later went on to manage their retail depots. In 1905 he qualified as a chemist and druggist and rejoined the firm as branch manager. In 1907 he moved to D T Evans of Margate to gain experience in dispensing and he later went on to open and manage pharmacies in Ramsgate and Broadstairs for the firm.
After a period managing Parkes Drug Stores in North London, he joined Boots in April 1913 and in 1914 was appointed manager of the Caledonian Road (782) store in London. He went on to supervise the Boots East London branches and then became engaged in sales promotion and the opening of new branches in many parts of the country. After the sale of Boots to the American Liggett in 1920, Richardson was engaged solely in sales promotion. In 1921 he visited America to study the sales management administration of the Liggett organisation. On his return he was appointed as the Company's first General Sales Manager. In 1935 Akeroyd was appointed as Sales Director, a Director of Boots (Lancashire) and Chairman of the newly formed Sales Committee. He was also a member of the original Formula Committee and later its Chairman. He was also a member of the Shopfitting, Retail Prices, Cafe Administration and Gross Profit committees. He was considered one of the company's most commanding figures in the period between the two world wars.
George Akroyd retired from Boots in 1946 after being with the company for 33 years. He died on the 4th March 1959 in Eastbourne at the age of 75. |
