Administrative HistoryResearch facilities expanded considerably after World War II and the appointment of Sir Jack Drummond, F.R.S as Director of Research. At the time the company's research interests included pharmaceuticals and medicinals, fine chemicals, and veterinary and horticultural products. The department employed chemists, biochemists, physical chemists, bacteriologists, mycologists, pharmacologist, parasitologists, veterinarians, entomologists, and plant pathologists.

In the 1960s the Research Department consisted of 7 divisions:
1. Chemistry
2. Biology
3. Antibiotics and fermentations
4. Veterinary science
5. Agriculture and horticulture
6. Technical development
7. Administrative
